Sutra of the Medicine Buddha

Medicine Sutra First

This sutra emphasizes the liberation of sentient beings from illnesses, suffering, disasters, and misery, as well as the acquisition of prosperity and happiness in this lifetime. It is a Dharma treasure for solving the practical problems of life.

The Meritorious Virtues and the Original Vows of the Medicine Buddha of Pure Crystal Radiance Sutra is often referred to as the Sutra of the Meritorious Virtues of the Medicine Buddha’s Original Vows, the Sutra of the Meritorious Virtues of the Medicine Master’s Original Vows, the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha’s Original Vows, or in an abbreviated form of simply, the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha. The entire sutra is a single volume in total, translated into Chinese from the original Sanskrit by Venerable Master Xuanzang (596–664 C.E.) of the Tang dynasty. Venerable Master Xuanzang was a native of present-day Yanshi, Henan province. His lay name was Chen Yi. He was called “Tripitaka” because he was an expert in the study of Sutra, Vinaya, and Sastra. He was an outstanding sutra translator and the founder of the Mind-Only (Faxiang) School. In 629 C.E., Xuanzang set off for India. Traveling alone, he encountered many hardships and dangers, and after his arrival, he remained in India for seventeen years of extensive study. In 648 C.E., he returned to Chang’an with 520 collections of teachings and 657 texts written in Sanskrit. Throughout his lifetime, he translated 75 sutras and commentaries, totaling 1,335 fascicles into Chinese.

Let go, Move On

By Venerable Master Hsing Yun

Front Book_Cover_Let_Go_Move_On_Final_OT (1)Non-attachment, the letting go of our desires, is a central teaching of Buddhism. As long as we crave, we suffer. We need to learn to let go of our desires in order to eliminate the suffering that results from craving. This truth is simple to understand, but nowhere near as easy to practice. As Venerable Master Hsing Yun points out in this book, it is not just an attachment to things, but even to our own views that prevent us from making progress. “Of all the sicknesses of the mind,” he writes, “none is worse than wrong views.” Prejudice, panic, envy, and moodiness are contrasted with respect, harmony, broad-mindedness, tolerance, and flexibility. By developing the right views, the Master says, we can learn to “view all sentient beings with compassion,” and practice the “Three Goods” of saying good words, doing good deeds, and thinking good thoughts. By cultivating our speech, our bodies, and our minds, we can begin to rise above our own concerns and reach out to others with compassion and loving-kindness.

Celestial Blooms

By Venerable Master Hsing Yun

Celestial PhotoFlowers in bloom bring much fragrance, color, and beauty into the world. Humans have always had a close relationship with flowers. This is especially true in Chinese societies, where flowers play an important role in the New Year festivities and other holidays and special occasions. Indeed, a well-arranged bouquet of flowers has a way of injecting a sense of vitality into a meeting or banquet. Whatever the occasion; inaugurations, felicitations, birthdays, visiting the sick, or welcoming friends and relatives, a gift of flowers is an excellent way to express one’s goodwill.
As expressed in a Chan verse, “The same
moon outside the window takes on a new appearance when plum blossoms are present,” through their charm, fragrance, and purity, flowers naturally enrich
our lives.

The Guiding Orchids: Masters of Reform and Innovation in the History of Buddhism

By Venerable Tzu Jung

GuidingOrchids 001 (2)

The Guiding Orchids offers a glimpse into the histories, lives, and experiences of Sakyamuni Buddha and other iconic Buddhist Masters of China. Each made significant contributions to the understanding of the Buddha, the Dharma, paving the way for the Sangha to practice with clarity and efficiency. To quote Venerable Tzu Jung, “The purpose of this book is to delve into the lives of eminent monks throughout history; their efforts to uplift Buddhism; revolutionize the doctrine; as well as strengthen and support society. It is my hope that their actions inspire Buddhists today, driving them to hold their own revolutions. For without revolutions, there can be no progress for Buddhism. Despite the many changes and crises it underwent throughout history, it remains unshaken.”
